The 1999 men's soccer team, under the helm of Scott Frey, finished the season with an overall mark of 16-5-2, including 11-2-1 in the MIAA. The Scots were MIAA Champions and eventually advanced to the NCAA Final Four for the first time in school history. The team finished with a national ranking of 14th and their 16 wins on the year were a school record. In addition, their 11 league wins tied the 1997 team for most in school history. During the season, the Scots achieved an 11-game consecutive undefeated streak, which was the most in school history.

A standout defensive team, Alma recorded its best goals against average in school history. On the offensive side of the ball, the team's 39 goals scored in MIAA play was the most in school history (tied with 1998 team).

In the NCAA Tournament, the Scots defeated Otterbein 2-2 (5-4 shootout) in a thrilling first round game and then beat Wisconsin-Whitewater 1-0 in the next round. Alma bested Texas Trinity 2-1 in the quarterfinals to set up a meeting with St. Lawrence in the semi-finals. Even though the Scots came up on the short end of a 2-0 score, Alma had made its mark and advanced farther than any team before or after them.

Chris Alexander was named MIAA Most Valuable Player and the Scots had three other players earn First Team All-League honors: Paul Aceto, Jon Cullen and Jeff Hosler. Alexander, also was named to the NSCAA All-American Second Team and was a team captain of the squad.
