Coming off a great multi-sports career at Lansing Waverly, Cathy Curley entered her freshmen year at alma college ready and raring to go.
Leading the Scots to a second place finish in 1992, Curley became a First Team All-MIAA selection and was runner-up medalist. This set the tone for a preview of coming attractions and planted the seeds of greatness that were about to transpire.
The team placed third in the conference in 1993 but Curley still earned First Team All-MIAA status and had the fourth-best scoring average to lead the Scots.
The determination to right the ship was evident in the very beginning of the 1994 season. Curley set a course record at the Pine River Country Club with an 81. That led the way to seven consecutive MIAA Jamboree wins, Alma College’s first league championship and the conference’s first undefeated team.
The curtain call for the senior class was epic in 1995. Curley was medalist at Hope (80) and set a course record at Adrian (84). This laid the foundation to run off another seven straight wins and push the streak to 14 wins in a row…undefeated two years and counting. Curley was the first player in Alma College history to be named to the First Team All-MIAA golf team four consecutive seasons.
Curley qualified for the National Golf Coaches Association national tournament three times, becoming the first player to represent Alma College at the national level.
She played in Iowa, Massachusetts, and Indiana, finishing as high as number 17 in the country.
Curley said: “I am honored and very appreciative of this recognition and opportunity to reconnect with my teammates and coach “G”. Being able to play golf at the collegiate level and for Alma College is something I will cherish forever. The opportunity to compete against Division I and Division II schools at the Ferris State and Michigan State Invitationals and the times spent with each other are a part of my favorite memories. Our ability to work hard and do that in a way that included lots of laughter was special. Playing in the national championship in Indianapolis my junior year with my family in attendance was another last memory.”
