The 1984 field hockey team is the second field hockey team to be inducted into the Alma College Athletic Hall of Fame. They join the 1983 squad, which was inducted as a part of the class of 2024.

The Scots finished the season 9-1-4, and won their second straight outright MIAA title, posting a league record of nine wins, one loss, and two ties for a total of 20 points. Calvin came in second place with a record of 8-3-1 (17 pts), Hope finished third at 7-2-3 (17 pts).

Alma had taken an unbeaten league season down to the final game. The Scots outscored their conference opponents by a margin of 29 to six, leading to a league best +23 goal differential. Kim Niemeyer led the MIAA in scoring, with the sophomore posting 11 goals and three assists to total 25 points. Mary Douglas finished third in league scoring with eight goals and six assists, good for 22 points. All-MIAA honors were awarded to Douglas, Stacey Emeott, and Laurie Swanson.

The Scots opened their 1984 season with a win over rival Albion College, before laying a beatdown on Adrian. Alma won by a final of 6-0, and went on to draw 0-0 with Hope College, who was considered one of the favorites to swipe the crown from atop Alma’s head.  Working on a 2-0-1 record, the Scots completed a season sweep of Albion with a 2-1 win, before defeating Calvin 1-0 in their first meeting of the season. The win gave Alma tremendous leverage at 4-0-1. With a head-to-head victory over Calvin, the Scots would be in full control of their destiny through the final game of the season, that was if they took care of business.

As it turned out, with the top two challengers for their throne in the rear-view mirror, it became business as usual for the MIAA title holders. The Scots went on to sweep Olivet, with two wins over the Comets split by a record-setting 7-0 romp against Kalamazoo. After completing a sweep of Adrian with a 3-0 victory, Kalamazoo, Hope, and Calvin were left in their path. After drawing 0-0 a second time with the Flying Dutch, Alma dispatched Kalamazoo 3-1. The win secured Alma’s second straight MIAA title. The Scots battled to a pair of 1-1 draws with Valparaiso and the University of North Dakota, before ending their season against Calvin with the title decided.
