Scots volleyball fielded a national contender in 2003. Alma posted a 31-6 record overall, winning the MIAA outright for the second straight season at 13-1, which was also their third title in a four year run where the Scots claimed at least a share of the top spot.

The Scots started the season 2-0, before falling to 2-2 early in the campaign. Alma ripped off five straight wins before falling to Hope College. At 7-3, the Scots pulled out an 11 game win streak, including revenge over the Flying Dutch. Ending the season on a 9-1 stretch, Alma was crowned champions of the MIAA for the second year in a row.

The Scots earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament after winning the MIAA tournament final against Calvin. In the opening round of the Division III Volleyball Tournament, Alma defeated Thomas More University 3-1, before being felled by Wittenberg 3-0 in the second round.

Lindsay Baker was named MIAA MVP, with Erin Fralick, Kerri Judson, and Kristin Judson garnering Second Team All-MIAA honors.

Kristin Judson was the offensive leader for the Scots, notching a team high 429 kills. Fralick was close behind with 339 kills, and Caitlin Deis registered 309. Six Scots scored in the triple digits in terms of kills. This was largely enabled by Baker, who collected 1,361 setting assists on the season. The record holding setter was understudied in ‘03 by Mary Murdoch, who would go on to place her own name in the record book. Baker also led the team in aces with 66.

The Judson sisters played a key role defensively, totaling 904 digs between them to lead the squad. Fralick was the leader at the net, collecting 131 total blocks.

Alma’s real strength was their depth. How much depth did the Scots have? Enough that they had NINE different players notch a triple-double during the 2003 season.
