The 1994 softball team, coached by Denny Griffin, finished with a 36-8 record and a 9-3 mark in the MIAA. The 36 wins were the most in school history at the time and still is the fourth highest total today. During the season, Alma had an 11-game winning streak that propelled them into the league tournament.
The Scots were the MIAA Tournament champions and the overall league champions, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.
After the NCAA Tournament, the Scots defeated Millikin (Ill.) 4-2, Illinois Benedictine 4-3 and Millikin again 7-6 to win the Regional. At Nationals, Alma lost a heartbreaking 4-3 decision in 16 innings to Central (IA) before being eliminated 6-1 by Rowan (NJ) in the second game.
The team had three players earn All-MIAA honors - Rachel Butler, Julie Hoffman and Deb Quackenbush - with Butler earning Most Valuable Player honors. In addition, Butler was named First Team All-American for her efforts. Alma hit .333 as team and the majority of the pitching fell on the shoulders of Beth Aulerich, who threw 147 innings and had 17 victories.
Alma's assistant coaches under Griffin that season were Phil Hansen and James Farnum.
