Curtis was a playmaker for the Alma College women’s basketball and volleyball teams. She competed at a high level in both sports while being named to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s Academic Honor Roll. As a four-year letter winner in two sports, and one of three All-Americans from the women’s basketball program, Ellen is regarded as one of the most successful women’s basketball players in school history.
Ellen’s name appears frequently in the women’s basketball record book, including top ten in single game field goals, single game field goal percentage, and single game rebounds. Her single season records include seventh in points scored (469), fifth in made field goals (193), and fifth in points per game (19.5). Ellen scored 1,277 points, 455 field goals, and had a 52.7% field goal percentage in her basketball career. During the 1997-98 season, she set a high-water mark for the program by scoring 39 points in a single game.
As a four-year starter on the volleyball team, Ellen was a leader on the front line. She garnered First Team All-MIAA accolades in 1997 and was named to the All-MIAA Second Team in 1998. She ranks third in Alma College volleyball records in single-season blocks (161) and career blocks (362).
