Box Score ALBION, Mich. – The Alma College women's lacrosse team got back on track in MIAA conference play with a win over Albion College on Saturday, April 8th. The Scots and Britons battled all game long in a close one but Alma scored two unanswered with time ticking down in the fourth to come away with a 10-9 victory.
The first quarter was all Alma as Albion was held scoreless in the first and the Scots notched a couple of goals. Sam Peterson opened up the scoring with a goal less than three minutes into the game to put Alma up 1-0. Alma was able to add another to their lead when Jamie Sherman put one into the net on a feed from Peterson to give Alma a 2-0 lead. Neither team would score the rest of the first quarter so the Scots took a 2-0 lead into the second.
Albion was able to finally get on the board in the second quarter as they tallied one just thirty seconds into the quarter. Alma quickly responded to get back to a two-goal lead with a Sarah Bollinger tally just a minute later. The Britons were able to rattle off two unanswered goals in two minutes that tied the game at threes. Rileigh McGeorge gave Alma the lead right back with a goal on a pass from Emma Keith just under the ten-minute mark in the second. Nine minutes would pass before Albion would respond with a goal of their own but McGeorge again scored quickly after a Briton goal on a pass from Peterson to give Alma a 5-4 lead going into halftime.
Peterson continued her season long dominance and score coming out of the half in just under two minutes to give Alma a two-goal lead again. McGeorge scored her third of the game for a hat trick on a man-up opportunity extending the Scots lead to three. Albion would battle back and score two goals to end the quarter trailing by one heading into the final frame.
Albion kicked off the scoring in the fourth to tie the game again but Peterson score her third of the game also for a hat trick by a pass from Sherman to once again regain the lead. The Britons again tied it with a goal just a minute later and took their first lead of the game with just over seven minutes remaining in the game. With under five minutes left, Kirsten Browne was able to tie the game back up at nines as she scored on a free position attempt heading into the final minutes of regulation. Just over thirty seconds later, Sherman was given a free position shot and where she also put one past the goalkeeper and gave Alma a lead with four minutes remaining. In the final minutes of gameplay, the Scots were tested but stood strong and held the Britons off the board as they were able to head back home with a win in conference play.
Peterson led the charge with five points on three goals and two assists. McGeorge also added three goals in the game along with Sherman recording two of her own. McGeorge led the way in the groundballs category with a game-high six as she also recorded a game-high five caused turnovers. Cassidy Smith got the win between the pipes for Alma as she made five saves.
Alma will now travel to Adrian College on Tuesday, April 11th, to take on the Bulldogs in a weekday matchup. The game will start at 7:00 PM at Docking Stadium.
