Box Score ANGOLA, Ind. – The Alma College women's lacrosse team traveled to Indiana on Friday, April 21st for a primetime MIAA matchup with the Trine Thunder. In a game that had several lead changes and multiple runs of momentum on offense, Alma came away victorious 16-14. This was Alma's first win over Trine since April of 2017.
Trine jumped out to an early lead of the Scots as the Thunder scored the first goal of the game 30 seconds in and the next one just three minutes into gameplay, taking a 2-0 lead. Alma responded quickly with their first of the game from Emma Keith less than a minute later, cutting the lead in half. Rileigh McGeorge tied the game for Alma with a goal a minute after her teammates, setting up for a back-and-forth battle between the Thunder and Scots. Trine would regain the lead and extend it with three goals in less than two minutes, putting Alma in a spot where they needed the next goal. Keith would score her second of the game on a pass from Jamie Sherman to stop the Thunder momentum and bring Alma within two. After assisting on the last goal, Sherman would net her first of the game, this time on a pass from Kirsten Browne which brought Alma back to trailing by one with just several minutes left in the first quarter. With a minute left, Keith fired in her third of the quarter for a hat-trick which was enough to tie the game again for Alma and finish the first quarter tied at 5 apiece.
Alma took their first lead of the game just seconds into the second quarter with a goal from Kirsten Browne with an assist from Kylie Lewis. Trine again found a hot-streak and scored three unanswered goals to retake the lead from Alma halfway through the quarter. Sam Peterson got on the scoring sheet and brought the Scots within one with a goal to slow the Thunder back down. With short time left in the half, Joanna Scorziello pooted the ball in the back of the net to tie the game on a pass from Browne before the quarter ended. Just 25 seconds later, Keith scored her fourth of the game and Alma once again retook the lead from the Thunder before heading into half with the score 9-8 in favor of the Scots.
Kicking off the third quarter, Trine would score the first goal coming out of halftime to tie the game once again. Alma did not let the Trine get momentum on offense as the Scots scored the next two goals, the first coming from Kylie Lewis unassisted, and the second coming from Sam Peterson on a feed from McGeorge. The Scots held a two-goal lead over the Thunder for a couple minutes before Trine scored two quick goals to tie the game. In a tight game, Alma didn't back down with every push by Trine as Sam Peterson fought for a hard-earned goal and put the Scots back up one midway through the third. Less than a minute later, Lauren Kenny joined in on the scoring and gave Alma a two-goal lead once again with just over four minutes remaining in the quarter. The Thunder would score the final goal of the third with a minute remaining, bringing them within one heading into crunch time in the final quarter.
Alma regained the two-goal lead again with Sherman's second of the game less than a minute into the fourth, trying to pull away from Trine. Alma then took their first three-goal lead of the game on a man-up opportunity with a shot from Scorziello that found the back of the net, holding the Thunder off early in the final frame. Trine would battle back in the fourth and bring themselves within one after two goals in three minutes, narrowing Alma's lead to one with four minutes remaining. Late in the game, Sherman scored her third of the game which proved to be crucial as the Scots lead extended back to two with only three minutes remaining in the contest. The Scots would hold off the late push from Trine and head back to Michigan with a win over the Thunder, keeping them in 4th place in the MIAA standings, fighting for a tournament berth.
Keith and Sherman led the Scots on offense with four points as Keith recorded four goals and Sherman scored three and an assist. Olivia Bunce led the Scots on the ground with a game-high four ground balls as Sarah Bollinger tied the game-high with four caused turnovers. Cassidy Smith held the Scots down in net making 11 saves throughout the back-and-forth game.
Alma will be back in action on Tuesday, April 25th, when they travel to Kalamazoo for a midweek game under the lights. The game is set to begin at 7:00 PM.
