Alma Rallies From Early Deficit, Earns Draw

Box Score

Alma, MI - Alma Women's Soccer took to the pitch for the second straight day on Sunday, September 4th to host Carthage College in non-conference play.

The Scots did not get off to a very good start, with the Firebirds dominating possession in the Alma side of the field. Carthage scored in the 4th minute when Amelia Price knocked in a header that made its way past keeper Allison Bush and into the net. It would take the visitors no time to double their lead, as a shot from Jessica Beymer deflected off of Bush and into the goal to give Carthage a 2-0 lead. Alma came close to scoring several times in the first half, including Lily Stephan blasting a point blank shot at the goal only to have it stopped by Ainsley Stallworth. The Scots went into the halftime break trailing 2-0.

Out of the break Alma looked like a new team. The Scots were aggressive and playing with loads of energy. Offensive pressure started to mount, and the Alma found themselves spending plenty of time in Carthage's half in the early going. The break would finally come in the 53rd minute when Paige Moore took a pass from Shelby Conrad, hammered a shot from the lefthand side of the 18-yard box, and sent it into the back of the net. Moore's first goal of the season gave Alma a burst of energy and dropped the deficit to just 1. The Scots would equalize in the 70th minute with Lily Stephan being taken down in the box. Alma was awarded a penalty and it was none other than Stephan who would take it. She smashed a shot over the keeper's head into the net to level things at 2. Despite a late push from Carthage, the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Overall, Alma outshot Carthage 17-8 on the day, outshooting the visitors 7-4 in the first, and 10-4 in the second. Allison Bush stopped 5 of 7 and picked up the tie bringing her to 1-0-1 on the season.

"I was proud of our effort in the second half to get back two goals. Each game we play we are gaining more opportunities to compete at a high level to play disciplined, effort based, Scots soccer." Said Alma Head Coach Kate Dylag

The Scots move to 1-0-1 on the year, and will have some time off before hosting College of Wooster on September 10th.
