Box Score 2 Alliance, OH – The Alma Volleyball team continued their season on Saturday, September 3 at the Mount Union Invitational.
Carnegie Mellon 3, Alma 2
Alma began day 2 against Carnegie Mellon. The Scots fell behind 2-0 quickly, dropping the first two sets and being outkilled 31-21. Alma looked down and out, but the Scots rallied and snag sets three and four, outkilling Carnegie Mellon 26-25 to force a winner-take-all 5th set. The Scots would fall in the 5th by a score of 15-7, dropping the contest.
Madison Neu led the Scots offensively with 12 kills, and Brooke Leroux added 11 kills. Callie Smith landed 3 aces, Ashley Miller tossed 21 assists, and Megan Greenup added 20 assists of her own. Kolbey Boyd dug out a game high 26 attacks in the contest.
Alma 3, Wooster 1
The Scots played the College of Wooster in their second game of the day. Alma fell behind with Wooster taking the first set 25-23. The Scots would bounce back to win 3 straight and take the game by a score of 3-1. As they have all weekend, the Scots got stronger as the game went on. They won the 2nd set by a score of 27-25, but pushed the margin in sets 3 and 4, winning by scores of 25-20 and 25-17.
Madison Neu tallied a team high 12 kills, with Megan Greenup adding 22 assists. Defensively, Natalie Dutton recorded 14 digs, with Ashley Miller adding 12, and Kolbey Boyd putting in 10 digs as well.
Alma's most notable player in the victory was Callie Smith. She recorded a career high 7 aces, while also adding in 8 kills to account for a team high 15 total points.
Head Coach Madison Smith had the following to say about the team's opening weekend performance, "I am very proud of the improvement and fight the team showed this weekend. We knew going into the tournament that we were starting with some very stiff competition, but that never deterred this team. I am excited to see where this mental toughness can take us this season."
Alma will travel to Division II Northwood on Tuesday night for an exhibition contest before taking part in the NCAC Crossover Challenge next weekend.
