GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Alma College Volleyball was on the road on Friday night, battled Calvin University in non-conference action. The Scots fell in straight sets, 25-14, 25-12, 25-21.
Calvin came out firing in the opening set, using a quick start and steady serving to take an early lead. Alma found momentum midway through the set behind kills from Natalie Dutton and Mallorie Nevadomski, as well as strong defensive coverage from Grace Steiner, but the Knights maintained control to win 25-14. The second set featured much of the same early competitiveness, but a late Calvin run widened the gap to 25-12. The Scots' fight showed in the third, where they led early and played their best volleyball of the night. A series of kills from Dutton and Nevadomski, with balanced setting, kept Alma within striking distance. Steiner anchored the defense with multiple diving digs to keep rallies alive. Alma trailed just 21-18 before Calvin closed out the match with a late run.
Alma finished with 18 kills and four aces. Dutton led the way with five kills, while Nevadomski added four. Steiner paced the defense with a game-high 17 digs and Rudy Maynard dished out 10 assists.
The Scots move to 9-14 overall, remaining 2-3 in MIAA play. Alma returns to the court on November 1, when they take on the nationally-ranked MIAA leaders at Hope College.
