Women's Soccer Downs Kalamazoo to Win Wet MIAA Opener

Box Score

ALMA, Mich.  The Alma College women's soccer team hosted Kalamazoo College to open MIAA play on Tuesday. The Scots were victorious in an offensive showdown by a score of 3-2.

Alma got on the board early in the contest when a Lily Stephan free kick clanged off the crossbar. The ball deflected high into the air, and it was Paige Kohler who got to it first, heading it into the net to give the Scots a 1-0 lead. The visitors would strike back in the 42nd minute, sending a rebound off of a blocked shot into the net to level things at 1. At the half, things were tied up.

Alma would retake the lead shy of 20 minutes into the 2nd. In the 64th minute, Lily Stephan found herself on a run down the right side. Having drawn all the attention to her, she sent a ball into the box across the net and Paige Moore was there to connect and send it home for a 2-1 lead. This lead would be short lived with Kalamazoo capitalizing on a strike from outside the 18-yard box in the 76th minute. The hosts would take the lead for good on a Lily Stephan free kick in the 81st minute from around 30 yards out. The Scots defense would hold strong for the rest of the game, with Alma winning 3-2.

Kalamazoo outshot Alma 16-13, also leading the shots on goal department 6-5. Lily Stephan was the hero of the day for the Scots, playing a role in all 3 Alma goals. She notched the game-winning-goal along with 2 assists.

"What a great team win at home. Scotland Yard is always a fun place to compete at and we did exactly that today. Game by game we are excited to start conference play and today showed we have the fight to grind out games as a unit." Said Head Coach Kate Dylag.

Women's Soccer will be back in action on Saturday at Calvin to continue MIAA play. Kickoff is set at 7 PM.
