Alma Beats Britons for First Win of the Season

Box Score

ALBION, Mich. – The Alma College women's soccer team earned its first win of the spring 2021 season Monday night at Albion College. The Scots won by a score of 2-1 with goals coming from sophomore Lily Stephan and freshman Abigail Dawes. Alma improves its record to 1-3 while Albion drops to 1-1.

Ally Wentworth had another stellar performance in net for the Scots as the senior tallied a season-high 11 saves to help Alma take its first victory of the season. The Mount Pleasant native made eight saves in the second half alone to keep the Britons off the board in the second half.

Albion started to send shots on net early with Wentworth standing tall on each of them. The Britons finally broke through just over 30 minutes into the game to go up 1-0.

The Britons would put the pressure on early in the second half but the Alma defense and Wentworth were able to sustain the pressure and keep it a one-goal deficit. Moments after an Albion player was called for a yellow card, Stephan was able to find the back of the net for the equalizer with under 23 minutes left in regulation.

The momentum swung in the Scots favor after Stephan tied the game at 1 as Dawes scored her first collegiate goal just a few minutes later to put Alma in front 2-1.

The Scots were able to protect the lead the rest of the way as Wentworth made five saves down the stretch. It was a satisfying victory for Alma against an Albion team that eliminated the Scots in the 2019 MIAA postseason tournament. This was also the first win for the Scots over the Britons since 2017.

Stephan led the team with four shots with three of them on goal. Along with Dawes, Ashley Oldham and Meghan Pfile each posted a shot as well. The Alma defense was able to overcome 20 shots and 11 corner kicks from the Britons while only giving up one goal.

Wentworth currently leads the MIAA in saves (36) and holds a 1.51 goals against average and a .857 save percentage.

"I always look forward to playing Albion, they give us a good game every season and it's always a fight to the end," Head Coach Meghan Gorsuch said. "We are proud of the effort and composure through the full 90 minutes and coming out with the win felt good tonight."

Alma will look to build off the win as it heads to Olivet College on Thursday, April 1st for a 4 p.m. start time.
