Women's lacrosse stopped by Carroll in season-opener

Alma, Mich. - The Alma College women's lacrosse team suffered a 15-9 loss to Carroll University (WI) in its season-opener on Saturday (Feb. 24) as the Scots opened the 2018 campaign at Bahlke Field. 

Senior Brianna Soriano (San Diego, Calif./Serra) scored five goals  to lead Alma (0-1 overall), while senior Shelby Frazer (Holt, Mich./Holt) found the net three times. 

Sophomore Allie Ray (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsweogue) was strong in net for Alma, stopping a career-high 25 saves - one shy of the school record. 

Carroll (1-0) was led by Michaela Johnson's five markers as the Pioneer outshot Alma, 48-16. 

How It Happened

  • Carroll opened up the game with a 2-0 lead on a pair of free-position shots before Shelby Frazer put the Scots on the board, making the score 2-1 just over seven minutes into the game on a free-position score.
  • The Pioneers scored five of the game's next six goals - including four in a span of 1:11 - to take a 7-2 lead. The Scots responded the three straight goals in 1:19, including a pair by Briannia Soriano, to close th exam to 7-5 with 9:36 remaining in the opening half.
  • Carroll scored three times, including twice on free-position opportunities, to enter the break up by a 10-5 margin. 
  • In the second half, the Pioneers scored four times to open up a 15-5 lead with just over six minutes to play. 
  • Alma finished the game with four straight scores, as Soriano scored twice on free-position shots while Frazer added a pair of markers.

Noteables

  • Allie Ray's 25 saves marked a career-high and one save shy of the school record, held by Stephanie Herman (26 saves at Berry on Feb. 28, 2012).
  • Brianna Soriano's five goals tied a career-high.

Up Next

The Scots will travel to Dallas, Texas, for their annual Spring Break trip, where they will face the University of Dallas and Otterbein College (OH). The Scots take on Dallas on Friday, March 2, followed by a meeting with Otterbein on Sunday, March 4. Alma will not return to Bahlke Field until April 3, playing its next seven games on the road.
