Christensen scores late to lift women's soccer at Saint Mary's

Notre Dame, Ind. - Senior Janelle Christensen (Allendale, Mich./Allendale) scored with 91 seconds remaining to lift the Alma College women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Saint Mary's College on Wednesday (Oct. 18) evening at the Purcell Athletic Fields. 

Christensen's goal stopped a Saint Mary's comeback attempt in the second half. After the Scots took a 2-0 lead in the 60th minute, the Belles found the net twice in a 15-minute span to knot the match at 2-2 in the 78th minute.

Senior Amanda Mladenovski (Shelby Township, Mich./Henry Ford II) scored both goals for Alma and took a team-high 12 shots as the Scots outshot Saint Mary's by a 38-6 margin.

How It Happened

  • Amanda Mladenovski gave Alma a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute, scoring on a free kick from 35 yards out that slipped in under the crossbar.
  • Mladenovski made the score 2-0 in the 60th minute, finishing off a crossing pass from Lexi Moyer.
  • Cedella Breitenstein got the Belles on the board in the 63rd minute when Molly Murphy gained possession of the ball inside the box and fed it to Breitenstein for the shot.
  • Saint Mary's tied the match in the 78th minute when McKenna O'Shea took a pass from Breitenstein and sent a shot just inside the right post.
  • Janelle Christensen broke the 2-2 tie in the 89th minute, deflecting a shot from Mladenovski that was sent in from midfield. 

Noteables

  • Alma has won back-to-back matches for the first time this season. 
  • Amanda Mladenovski has scored four goals in her last two games and has netted five markers over her last four appearances. Mladenovski leads the Scots with nine goals and registered a career-high five points in the match with 2-1—5 totals. 
  • Janelle Christensen scored her career-high fifth goal of the season and second career game-winning goal. Both of her game-winners have been scored this season, and both have come in matches against Saint Mary's.
