Box Score Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Alma College men's soccer team picked up its third straight shutout with a 1-0 win over Aquinas College on Tuesday evening. It is the first time since September 2012 the Scots (3-0, 0-0 MIAA) have shut out three straight opponents.
The game was highlighted by two freshman: midfielder Noah Canlas (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) and keeper Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven). Canlas scored the game's only goal in the 36th minute. He received a centering pass from fellow freshman Brian Ganton (Williamston, Mich./Williamston), led his defender to his right and shot to his left to the near post past the diving Aquinas keeper. Canlas is one of three goal-scorers on the year, two of which are freshmen. Mast earned his first career win and shutout with the two-save performance.
Aquinas (1-2-2, 0-0 WHAC) pushed for the tie with three shots in the final 13 minutes, but could not get one past the goal line. The Saints took 14 shots in the game, six of which were blocked by Alma defenders.
The Scots continue their non-conference road schedule with a game on Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Franklin at a neutral site.
Quotes
Head Coach Josh Oakley
"I think getting Garrison some minutes in goal was great for the team. Defensive Player of the Week Nick Strait was the first teammate to praise Masty tonight. This over-emphasizes the uncommonness we sell and see all the time in our program."
"We are defending well at the moment and doing what it takes to win. We can succeed with different combinations of players because we work hard for each other and we believe in every person in this team."
"It's also a very dangerous thing for anyone to assume we've arrived as a team this year. We are not even close to where I believe we can get. Every game is a war and if we are not improving every time out, we are getting worse."
"We just want to play again soon because this group thrives on being challenged."
