Box Score Alma, Mich. - The Alma College women's soccer team snapped a four-game winless streak on a rainy Wednesday (Sept. 28) afternoon at Scotland Yard, defeating Trine University by a 4-2 margin. The Scots improved to 4-3-2 overall with the win, including a 3-2-2 mark in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
Senior Megan Kalanik (Milford, Mich./Lakeland) scored two goals in the game, marking her second career multi-goal outing, as the Scots opened up a 3-0 lead en route to the victory. Jessica Burg (Grand Ledge, Mich./Grand Ledge) and junior Whitnee Foote (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) also finished with a goal and an assist each for Alma.
Kalanik opened the scoring in the 12th minute off a crossing pass that deflected off Trine goalie Khrystyna Thompson and into the net. Just over five minutes later, Kalanik struck again, sending a shot past Thompson off a feed from Burg and Foote. Burg put Alma up by a 3-0 margin in the 21st minute, scoring on a rebound shot from freshman Lexi Moyer (Suttons Bay, Mich./Traverse City West).
Trine (2-6-2, 2-6-0 MIAA) was able to break through in the 39th minute on its first shot of the game when Mackenzie Hoffman headed in a crossing pass from Carly Osinski to enter the half down by a pair of goals.
In the second half, Foote scored her sixth goal of the season on a long run after taking a pass from senior Kayla Linstruth (Royal Oak, Mich./Royal Oak). Foote beat goalie Kristina Velkovic, who entered the match for the Thunder in the 21st minute.
Trine added a late marker in the 75th minute when Hoffman scored again, heading in a pass from Osinski.
Thompson stopped four of the seven shots she faced for Trine, while Veljovic made eight saves on nine shots as the Scots outshot the Thunder by a 22-7 margin. Junior Kelsey Postema (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) made three saves on five shots in net for the Scots.
Alma will wrap up the first half of play in the MIAA on Saturday, Oct. 1, when it travels to Saint Mary's College for a 1:00 p.m. contest in South Bend, Ind.
