Scots open MIAA play with clean sheet, defeat Albion, 1-0

Box Score

Albion, Mich. - The Alma College women's soccer team opened Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play with a 1-0 win over Albion College at the Davis Athletic Complex on Saturday (Sept. 10). Freshman Lexi Moyer (Suttons Bay, Mich./Traverse City West HS) scored the game's only goal for the Scots (2-1-0 overall 1-0-0 MIAA) in the 12th minute.

Alma, with wins in its last two matches, notched its first clean sheet of the season despite being outshot by Albion, 17-11. Junior Kelsey Postema (Marshall, Mich./Marshall HS) stopped all 10 shots she faced for her fourth career shutout.

"It was a hard fought battle today and while it wasn't pretty at times, we did what we needed to do to get the win," Head Coach Ashley Bingaman said. "In the first half we executed our game plan perfectly, and in the second half Albion turned up the heat and we had to grind it out to get the win.

"Kelsey (Postema) came up huge today, making so many saves against a talented group of attacking players. She and I talked after last season about her ability to do this and I'm so proud of her today and for all of her work."

Moyer, with a goal in each of her last two appearances, peppered Britons' keeper Maggie Troost from the start of the match, with three shots on goal early in the game, including the only score in the 12th minute. She finished the game with six total shots, while senior Megan Kalanik (Milford, Mich./Lakeland HS) recorded three, including two on net.

Moyer's goal came on a high arcing shot from the top right corner of the box and was chipped in towards the net after junior Kaylynne Perian (Livonia, Mich./Franklin HS) sent the ball in from just inside the midfield line.

Albion (2-2-1, 1-1-0 MIAA) was led by Jenna Urso, who tested Postema six times and tallied 10 total shots in the game to lead all players. Troost, who made three saves, was pulled at the half in favor of Megan Bricely. Bricely stopped the only shot she faced in the final 45 minutes.

The Scots remain on the road, traveling to Adrian College on Monday, Sept. 12 for a 7:00 p.m. meeting with the Bulldogs.
