Box Score Midland, Mich. - The Alma College women's soccer team opened the 2016 season with a 3-1 loss to host Northwood University on Thursday (Sept. 1). The Scots (0-1 overall, 0-0 MIAA) scored the only goal of the second half.
Northwood (1-0, 0-0 GLIAC) scored three times in the first half to take a three-goal advantage into the break. The Timberwolves outshot the Scots by a 19-10 margin for the contest, but were held off the board in the second half by junior goalkeeper Kelsey Postema, who made eight saves, including five in the final 45 minutes.
In the second half, junior Janelle Christensen (Allendale, Mich./Allendale) netted her first career goal, scoring in the 66th minute from the right side of the field. Christiansen finished off a crossing pass from junior Whitnee Foote (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant), who was credited with her sixth career helper.
Alma will conclude the non-conference portion of its schedule on Saturday, Sept. 3, hosting Central College in the first half of a soccer doubleheader at Scotland Yard. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
