Box Score Kalamazoo, Mich. - The Alma College women's soccer team upset the top seed in the MIAA Tournament on Thursday (Nov. 3) evening at Mackenzie Field, defeating Kalamazoo College, 2-1, in a penalty kick shootout. Alma won the shootout, 3-2, and advances to the MIAA Championship game for the first time since the 2011 campaign.
The shootout was tied after two rounds, and Alma grabbed a 3-2 advantage when the Hornets went high on their shot attempt, while junior Brooke Steed (Franklin, Tenn./Centennial) converted her attempt. In the fourth round, junior Kelsey Postema (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) made a diving save, while Hornets' keeper Grace Smith stopped junior Amanda Mladenovski (Shelby Township, Mich./Henry Ford II). In the final round, the shot attempt by Kalamazoo was wide, giving Alma the victory.
Alma scored in the third minute on early pressure when senior Megan Kalanik (Milford, Mich./Lakeland) sent a header into the goal off of a cross from the right side of the box by Mladenovski.
Kalamazoo tied the game in the 69th minute when Libby Munoz scored on a rebound, putting the ball past Kelsey Postema from a crowd in front of the net.
The Hornets put nine shots on goal, while the Scots tallied seven. Postema made eight saves in the victory.
The Scots will now travel to Holland, Mich., on Saturday, Nov. 5, to face Hope College for the MIAA Championship. Alma was 0-1-1 against the Dutch during the regular season, and has played to a pair of double overtime ties in its last two visits to Van Andel Stadium. The game is scheduled for a noon start.
