Women's soccer falls in overtime at Calvin

Box Score

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Alma College women's soccer team fell in overtime on a wet and cold day at Zuidema Field, suffering a 2-1 setback to host Calvin College. The Knights scored in the 91st minute to end the game after tying the contest with just over four minutes to play in regulation.

Alma, which has played seven overtime games this season - including a 2-2 draw with the Knights on September 24 - is now 4-2-4 in its last 10 outings and falls into a tie for fourth place in the MIAA with Albion. The Scots and Britons each have 22 points with two games to play, while Olivet is in sixth place with 19 points as the three teams battle for a spot in the MIAA Tournament. The top four teams after the regular season qualify for the MIAA Tournament, which begins November 3.

Senior Megan Kalanik (Milford, Mich./Lakeland) opened the scoring for the Scots, netting her eight goal of the season in the 57th minute, matching the goal total from her sophomore and junior years combined.

Alma held the Knights at bay for most of the game until Emily VanVeldhuisen tied the game in the 86th minute off of a Calvin corner kick. Thirty seconds into the overtime session, Calvin's Carly Veenstra finished the game, scoring off of a cross from Allie Corp to beat junior Kelsey Postema (Marshall, Mich./Marshall). Postema finished the game with seven saves as the Knights outshot the Scots, 24-8.

Alma remains on the road, traveling to Angola, Ind., on Saturday, Oct. 29, to face Trine University. The game is slated for a noon start.
