Box Score On Sunday afternoon, the Alma College Women's Lacrosse team opened up their 2015 season under new Head Coach Christie Havrilla-Haines when they took on host Huntingdon College on a cloudy day in Alabama.
The Scots made Havrilla-Haines' debut at the helm a winning one by defeating the Hawks by a score of 2016. The victory put Alma at 1-0 on the season, while Huntingdon fell to 0-3 on the young campaign.
"What an amazing start to our season!" said Havrilla-Haines. "The girls went out there and played Alma Scots Women's Lacrosse! This is our first win as new coaches, a new team and a new family and we have no plan on stopping."
It was a high-scoring affair and a close one from the get go. The Hawks scored first but then Alma notched the next two on goals by Sr. M Tracy Gallihugh (Lansing/Waverly). Huntingdon responded with four in a row but the Scots did not panic and methodically worked their way back into it.
Six consecutive goals were then tallied by the Scots - two by Gallihugh, two by Jr. A Ashton Street (Brighton/Brighton), and one each by Sr. M Sydney Bryce (Lake Orion/Lake Orion) and Fr. M Brianna Soriano (San Diego, CA/Serra).
The two teams traded off a few goals until the end of the half and Alma went into the halftime break with a lead of 10-7 in an entertaining 30 minutes.
In the second half, the Hawks led the visitors by a score of 12-11 at the 13:01 mark, but Alma would then score six of the next seven goals, the last being by Soriano, to take the 17-13 advantage.
The Soriano goal came at 20:21 on a free position kick and the Scots did a great job of playing even with Huntingdon for the remaining nine minutes. The Hawks put a scare into Alma by making it a 17-16 game with 5:32 left, but the Scots notched the final three and walked off the field with the well-earned 20-16 victory.
For the day, both Gallihugh and Street notched seven goals, while adding one and four assists respectively as well. Bryce finished with three, while Soriano had two and So. A Abby Porter (Rochester/Stoney Creek) had the other goal for the Scots. Shots on goal leaders were Gallihugh and Street with 12 and eight a piece, with Bryce and Soriano tallying four each.
So. GK Miranda Kruse (Ann Arbor/Pioneer) went the distance in goal and made five saves in the 21 shots that she faced. The defense was anchord by Jr. D Emily Reverman (Grand Ledge/Grand Ledge), So. D Kaitlyn Urick (Glen Ellyn, IL/Glenbrand West) and So. D/M Brittney Jaynes (Clarkston/Clarkston).
Up next for the Scots is a date at Berry College (GA) on Tuesday afternoon, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
