Box Score The Alma College Women's hoops team concluded the 2014-15 season on Saturday by welcoming Adrian College to the Art Smith Arena. The Scots fall to the Bulldogs 71-55 at home to finish the year with a 7-18 overall record. Despite the loss, spirits were still high inside the Art Smith Arena as Alma honored seniors G Morgan Henry (Wayland/Wayland Union), G Mallory Pruett (Ishpeming/Ishpeming) and G Grace Wheeler (St. Ignace/LaSalle) in a Senior Day ceremony before the game.
The Scots wrap up the 2014-15 season with a 7-18 overall record and a 2-14 mark in the MIAA.
"As I told the team, you can't shoot as poorly as we did and expect to win any basketball game," said Scots Head Coach Kris Johnson. "It just was not our day although we competed very hard all the way to the end. The seniors that played their last games today will be missed and they represented themselves very well in their last outing.
"I believe that the girls had fun this season, and I believe they saw what it takes to be competitive and successful in this league. The younger players seem to want to be a part of it and this season was a great learning experience for them. This is the first step of the process and I am pleased with the efforts of all involved."
Alma jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, before the Bulldogs would come back to knot the score at 4-4 with 18:00 remaining.
The visitors would take the 7-6 lead but the Scots seniors would answer right back as Wheeler sank and layup and Henry dropped in two free throws to give Alma the lead back, 10-7, with just over 13 minutes left to go.
Adrian would go on a 7-0 run to retake the lead 16-11 at the 8:04-mark.
The Bulldogs would stretch the lead to six points, before the Scots would battle back to cut it one at the end of the half thanks to a layup by So. F Brianna Yaroch (Sanford/Meridian). At the half, the home team was down 24-23.
Adrian would extend the lead back to six to start the second half, before back-to-back Alma layups would bring the Scots within two, 31-29, with 16:57 left to go in regulation.
A made layup at 9:45 would give give the Bulldogs their biggest lead of the game so far, opening up the advantage to 50-39.
In the final two minutes of half, the visitors would go six-of-seven from the line to hand Alma the 71-55 defeat at home.
In her final game in the maroon and white, Wheeler recorded a double-double, collecting a team-high 21 points and 10 boards in 30 minutes. Pruett scored eight points and six rebounds, while Henry added six points and six boards in the loss.
Alma shot 22-of-66 (33.3%) from the floor and 11-of-18 (61.1%) from the line. The three point line was not kind to the Scots on Saturday, as Alma went 0-of-13 from beyond the arc. The Scots outrebounded Adrian 48-42 and held the advantage in bench scoring 14-7.
