Kalamazoo, MI – Alma College Women's Basketball was in action on Saturday, taking on Kalamazoo College to close out the regular season. Alma clinched an MIAA Tournament berth, winning 83-57.
The Scots jumped out to an early 6-1 lead, before Kzoo collected a short run of their own to tie the game at 6-6 at the midway point of the opening quarter. It was basket-for-basket until the final minute of the quarter. The Scots found a late surge to push ahead, taking an 18-13 lead into the break. Alma got the first bucket of the second quarter, before the Hornets connected on a pair of shots to close the lead down to two. Another Scots push saw Alma get their advantage up to nine points at 29-20. The lead hovered between six and eight points for most of the period, with Alma finally connecting on a 7-4 run, taking a nine point lead into the half at 42-33.
Coming out of halftime, it was the home team that had the momentum. Alma had makes, but Kzoo slowly closed the Alma lead down until the game was tied at 46 halfway through the period. Hope was dashed however, when Alma blazed a 13-0 run that seemed to blow the game open. The Hornets got the last basket of the quarter, but the damage was done, with Alma leading 59-48 after three. The Scots came out on fire in the fourth quarter. A string of six made three pointers in the first five minutes of the quarter exploded the Scots lead to 22, effectively putting things to bed. Kalamazoo never managed to get the Alma lead back down under 20, and the Scots ran out 83-57 winners.
Mady Weber led the Scots with 16 points and three rebounds.
Kate Starkey had 15 points and three assists.
Breckyn Werner had 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Cadence Kaminske scored 13 points, and
Reese Wisniewski had 10 points and six boards.
With the win, the Scots end the regular season at 11-14, 7-9 in MIAA play. The victory sees Alma jump Kalamazoo, and the Scots will have the fifth seed in the MIAA Tournament, Presented by Collegiate Credit Union. Alma will take on fourth seeded Calvin University in the first round. The teams split the season series 1-1, with both teams winning on their home floors.
