Women's Basketball Concludes Season in First Round of MIAA Tournament

The Scots were defeated by fifth seeded Calvin on Wednesday night

Grand Rapids, MI – Alma College Women's Basketball was in action on Wednesday night, taking part in the first round of the 2026 MIAA Women's Basketball Tournament, presented by Collegiate Credit Union. The Scots were felled by fifth seeded Calvin University, the final score 60-51.
 
The game featured just one made field goal in the first six minutes, which belonged to Calvin on the first shot of the game. The Scots got their first points at the 5:34 mark on a pair of Kate Starkey free throws, which made the score 3-2. Alma Collected their first made field goal of the night at 3:46, which saw the scoring pick up. At the end of the first, Alma trailed 18-12. To open the second quarter, Calvin put together a pair of makes to extend their lead to eight points. However, alma answered with five straight points of their own to get the gap back down to one possession. The Scots deficit hung in the three to five point range for the remainder of the period, and the visitors trailed 30-25 at halftime.
 
Out of the halftime break it was alma who seized momentum. The Scots opened with six straight points to take their first lead of the game at 31-30. The road team tussled for the lead with Calvin for several minutes, before the Knight took it back for what would turn out to be the final time with 4:42 to go in the third. The hosts tried to run away, but a late pair of free throws saw the Scots enter the fourth quarter trailing 42-39. In the final period, Calvin opened with a decisive 9-0 run that would turn out to be the difference. Despite a late push by the Scots, the was the Knights who would run out the clock, with the final score reading 60-51.
 
Kate Starkey led with 13 points and two rebounds. Breckyn Werner collected nine points and six rebounds in her final game as a Scot. Sarah Ebel scored seven and grabbed five boards in her career finale.
 
The Scots close the 2025-26 season out at 11-15, and look forward to the 2026-27 campaign.
