Women's Basketball Downed by Calvin

Alma fell 85-52 on Wednesday

Grand Rapids, MI – Alma College Women's Basketball was on the road on Wednesday, taking part in the penultimate game of the regular season at Calvin. The Scots were defeated by a final of 85-52.

Calvin got ahead 7-5 in the early minutes of the game, with Alma hanging in until the Knights were able to rip off an 11-4 scoring run in the second five minutes of the quarters. It allowed the home side to take an 18-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. After the teams scored evenly to open the second quarter, a 6-0 Alma run got the Scots back within a single possession at 25-22. However, Calvin pulled away again, putting together an 8-2 run to close the half with the gap at nine points, 33-24.

Out of the halftime break, momentum swung in both directions. The Knights led by as much as 13, before Alma came back within eight points. However, Calvin pulled back ahead by 13 at the halfway point of the quarter. Another 17-5 Calvin run saw the Knights extend their lead to 63-38 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Scots couldn't eat into their deficit, despite their best efforts. The final score came out to 85-52 in favor of Calvin.

Alma was led by Cadence Kaminske, who had 13 points. Reese Wisniewski collected 12 points and a game-high seven rebounds off the bench. Breckyn Werner added seven points.

The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they take on Kalamazoo College in their regular season finale. Alma currently sits in sixth place, a win would guarantee the Scots the five seed in the MIAA Tournament, and most likely a trip to Calvin in the first round. A loss would see the Scots tournament chances rest on the result of the Adrian/Albion game.
