Alma, MI – Alma College Women's Basketball was in action on Sunday, hosting Saint Mary's College in MIAA conference play. The Scots were red hot from the floor, running and gunning to an 80-50 victory on Senior Day.
The game opened with Alma on fire. The Scots jumped straight out to a 15-3 lead, nailing three triples in the opening minutes to go along with some stellar defense. Before the Scots could pull away, SMC collected an 8-7 scoring run to get back in the game. The Scots led 22-11 at the end of the first. In the second quarter, the Scots ripped off another 13-4 run, extending their lead to 20 points at 35-15 midway through the period. The Belles fought their way back from the brink once more, hitting on a 13-8 run to close the first half with Alma's lead at 43-28.
Out of the halftime break, the Scots slammed home 12 straight unanswered points, pushing ahead 55-28 to force an SMC timeout. The visitors strung together a 9-4 run, but Alma answered with a 5-2 scoring push at the end of the quarter. 64-39 was the score after three. In the fourth quarter, the Belles scored evenly with Alma to open the quarter, but the Scots depth was too much, and an 8-2 run to close the game saw the Scots walk out 80-50 winners.
The win is the first time that Alma has defeated Saint Mary's by 30 or more, the last time being in 2021.
Cadence Kaminske led all scorers in the game with 22 points.
Kate Starkey scored 11 points, also collecting six assists and four rebounds.
Molly Deurloo had 10 points and seven rebounds. Also collecting seven board was Breckyn Wenrer to go with nine points.
Alma moves to 10-13, 6-8 in MIAA play. The win gives the Scots a firm grasp on the sixth seed in the MIAA tournament. The Scots will be in action at Calvin on Wednesday night.
