Box Score On Wednesday evening, the Alma College Women's Basketball team traveled to Angola, Indiana to take on MIAA foe Trine University in a MIAA tilt. The Thunder led the Scots by ten at halftime and then at the end of the game as well, winning by a score of 66-56.
With the loss, Alma dropped to 7-17 on the season and 2-13 in the league, while Trine improved to 15-9 in 2014-15 and 9-6 in the MIAA.
"One of the best second halves we had all year," said Alma Head Coach Kris Johnson. "Turnovers hurt us in the first half so they had a 10 point lead at the break. We had our chances in the second half and cut into the lead, but could not capitalize on our defensive stops with scores. It's great seeing improvement by all of the girls. This kind of play will hopefully carry over into Saturday."
There were four ties in the first 4:08 of the game, the last being 8-8 before Trine went on a 10-1 run to take a 19-8 advantage. Alma would fall behind by as many as 12 points (24-12) before the Scots closed the gap to 27-20. The final bucket of the rally came at the 1:25 mark of the first half and was a the second of two free throws by Sr. G Grace Wheeler (St. Ignace/LaSalle). However, Trine would make a three-point play and go into the break with the 30-20 lead.
The second half was a case of a home team not letting the underdog road squad get back into the game. Alma did cut the deficit to five points, at 36-31, when Jr. F Raeanna Zink (Frankenmuth/Frankenmuth) made a lay-up with 15:57 left in the game.
The Thunder would then extend their advantage to 13 on a three-pointer at the 10:48 mark of the second frame. The closest the Scots could come after that was seven points, a feat they accomplished twice, but each time, Trine had an answer.
Trine hit two free throws in the final minute of the contest which pushed the lead back to 10, at 66-56, and that is how it would end at the Thunder's Hershey Hall.
Zink led all Alma scorers with 19 points and added 10 rebounds for a double double in the loss. Fr. G Lauren Higgins (Sterling Heights/Cardinal Mooney Catholic) was next for the Scots with 13 points, while So. G Tara Padgett (Freeland/Freeland) added eight points. Wheeler finished with six points and five boards for the Scots.
Alma will play their final game of the 2014-15 season on Saturday afternoon when they host Adrian College for Senior Day 2015. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
