Women's soccer blanks Trine, 2-0, on Senior Day

Box Score

Alma, Mich. - Celebrating Senior Day at Scotland Yard, the Alma College women's soccer team posted a 2-0 shutout of Trine University on Saturday (Oct. 31) afternoon. Junior Jessica Burg (Grand Ledge, Mich./Grand Ledge) and senior Bryn Kittle (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Christian) each scored for the Scots, which finished the month of October with a record of 5-1-2.

Alma (8-8-1 overall, 7-7-1 MIAA) fielded a starting lineup of seniors, with the exception of sophomore keeper Kelsey Postema (Marshall, Mich./Marshall), as 11 of the Scots' 12 seniors on the roster saw action.

With rain falling Scotland Yard, the Scots took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute when Burg tapped in a rebound goal off of a shot from sophomore Whitnee Foote (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant). For Burg, it was her first goal since netting a hat trick in an 8-1 win at Monmouth (Ill.) on September 6.

Alma made it 2-0 in the 56th minute when Kittle headed in the ball off of a corner kick from senior Allison Smith (Commerce Township, Mich./Walled Lake Northern). Kittle's goal was her second of the year - a season-high - while Smith recorded an assist for the second straight game.

Postema did not face a shot on net in the first half, and freshman Becca Gamble (Midland, Mich./Dow) stopped the one shot she faced in the second half to record the Scots' third shutout in four games. Alma tallied 19 shots, including nine on goal, while holding Trine (2-15-1, 1-14-1) to just six opportunities.

The Scots will conclude the 2015 season on Monday, Nov. 2, traveling to South Bend, Ind., to face the Saint Mary's Belles. Kickoff is slated for 3:00 p.m.

QUOTES

Head Coach Ashley Bingaman

On the win...

"It feels good. The second half we came out a lot stronger and we talked about playing to our full potential all the time, and sometimes that's hard when there is a lot going on. The first half was good, we just knew we could do more with it, so we came out and had double the amount of shots."

On the seniors ...

"it meant a lot for the last time on Scotland Yard, and it meant a lot to the underclassmen to send them out. They wanted to send them out the way they deserved to be. It is a great group of girls that have been through one of the harder times of the program in the transition periods. They've done some great things and they've stepped up and filled roles this season. It feels good to be able to send them out with a shutout."
