Box Score Alma, Mich. - The Alma College women's soccer team got back to its winning ways on Wednesday (Oct. 21) afternoon, defeating Kalamazoo College by a 2-0 margin at Scotland Yard. Sophomores Whitnee Foote (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) and Taylor Roberts (Jackson, Mich./Northwest) scored for the Scots (7-7 overall, 6-6 MIAA), who kept themselves alive in the race for one of the spots in the MIAA Tournament.
Alma, which has won five of its last six matches, applied pressure on Kalamazoo early, and broke through when Foote took a pass in the penalty box from junior Macayla Greiner (Hart, Mich./Hart) and sent the ball across the goal and past keeper Grace Smith to make it 1-0 in the 28th minute. For Foote, who missed the last two matches, the goal was her team-best sixth of the season.
The Scots took a two-goal lead in the 34th minute when Roberts sent the ball in and it caromed off of a Kalamazoo defender and in. Senior Kelly Wilson (Midland, Mich./Dow) was credited with an assist, her team-leading sixth of the year.
Sophomore keeper Kelsey Postema (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) made a season-high 12 saves to post her second shutout of the season as Kalamazoo (7-8-1, 7-5-1) outshot the Scots, 22-15.
Alma is on the road on Saturday, Oct. 24, traveling to Hope College. Kickoff is slated for noon at the Van Andel Soccer Stadium in Holland, Mich. In the first meeting between the Scots and Flying Dutch on September 23, Alma fell by a 2-1 margin.
NOTES
• With four matches remaining in the MIAA season, the Scots are in fifth place, four points back from Kalamazoo and Olivet, which are tied for third. The top four teams qualify for the MIAA Tournament. Alma split the regular-season matches with both schools, and in the event of a tie, would have to go to a second tiebreaker, which is the record against the teams ahead of them in the standings.
• The win was the second for Alma at Scotland Yard, where they own a 2-4 mark this season. The Scots have shut out their opponent in each home victory this year.
• Whitnee Foote leads the team with six goals, a career-high. She also is tied for second on the team lead with 15 points. Foote has a goal in each of her last two appearances.
• Macayla Greiner has a point in four of her last five games and is tied for second on the team lead with 15 points. Greiner had 15 career points after 41 games entering the 2015 season and has matched that total after 14 contests.
• Kelly Wilson has a point in five of her last six outings and leads the team with six assists. Wilson, who paces the Scots with 16 points, has tied career-high marks for assists and points in a season, which were set as a sophomore in 2013.
QUOTES
Head Coach Ashley Bingaman
"We did not play well in our last match, and the big thing was if we could come off of that and play good soccer, and we did. It was a great effort the whole 90 minutes, and we had some players come off the bench and did really good work for us, which was nice to see. Kalamazoo picked up the pressure in the second half, and for us to be able to hold them off and play smart and force those shots that aren't high quality from the outside that Kelsey (Postema) can handle was great."
