Women's soccer pushes win streak to four games

Box Score

Adrian, Mich. - The Alma College women's soccer team extended its season-best winning streak to four games on Tuesday (Oct. 13) evening, defeating the Adrian College Bulldogs by a 3-1 margin on a rainy night at Docking Stadium on the Adrian campus. Three different Scots scored in the win as Alma (6-6 overall, 5-5 MIAA) moved into tie for fifth place in the MIAA standings.

The Bulldogs (3-6-6, 1-6-4) got on the board first when Sofia Farah scored on a penalty kick, beating sophomore keeper Kelsey Postema (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) high in the right corner in the 24th minute. The Scots responded immediately, scoring just under two minutes later when junior Megan Kalanik (Milford, Mich./Lakeland) took a shot from inside the penalty box that beat Adrian keeper Lexi Lewandowski to the top right corner of the net to make it 1-1.

In the second half, the Scots took a 2-1 lead in the 61st minute when junior Macayla Greiner (Hart, Mich./Hart) played the ball into the empty net after Lewandowski missed challenging the pass from Kalanik at the top of the box. Alma put the match away 40 seconds later when senior Kelly Wilson (Midland, Mich./Dow) fired a shot from 30 yards out that beat Lewandowski to give the Scots a 3-1 advantage.

Kalanik, with a goal and an assist, paced the Scots with five shots as Alma outshot the Bulldogs by a 16-11 margin. Senior Allison Smith (Commerce Township, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) also contributed two assists in the win for her first career multi-assist effort.

The Scots return home on Saturday, Oct. 17, to host the Olivet College Comets. Kickoff is slated for Noon at Scotland Yard on the campus of Alma College.

QUOTES

Head Coach Ashley Bingaman

On the game ...

"We are playing better and better every day. Every game we get better and every practice we get better. We had a very slow start, and that bit us in the beginning, but it was good that we were able to put those goals away. Adrian came around much fiercer than the last time we played them. They have a top-ranked defense and their goalkeeper was unbelieveable and made some huge saves. To score three against Adrian, we feel great."

On the play of Megan Kalanik ...

"Megan is a gamer. She thrives on high-pressure situations and just gets it done. She's gotten better as the season has gone on and has been a spark for us. She stepped up and earned that starting role in the last few games and has been producing great results."
