Box Score The Alma College Women's Basketball continued conference play on Wednesday evening, traveling to The Cutler Event Center to take on Olivet College. Despite holding the 35-31 lead at halftime, the Scots would fall to the Comets 76-68 on the road.
Alma drops to 6-8 overall and 1-4 in the MIAA with the loss, while Olivet improves to 6-7 on the year and 1-3 in conference play with the victory.
"Overall, it was probably one of our better offensive nights," remarked Alma Head Coach Kris Johnson. "But, we could not put together consecutive stops when we needed them on the defensive end."
The visiting Scots came out of the gate on fire, sinking five early jumpers to take the 12-2 lead with 15:38 to go.
Olivet would cut the lead to six, but the Scots would build it back up to ten thanks to a triple by So. G Nicole Green (Portland/Portland) at 9:13.
Despite the Comets best efforts to take the lead, Alma would take the 35-31 advantage into the locker rooms.
The second half saw Olivet score nine-straight points early to take the 37-36 lead with just over 16 minutes remaining.
The Scots quickly answered with a 10-0 run of their own to regain the 46-42 lead at the 11:54 mark.
Following five lead changes, a jumper by Jr. F Raeanna Zink (Birch Run/Frankenmuth) at 6:43 would bring the Scots within one at 57-56.
Despite tying the game at the 6:09 mark, Olivet would take the lead and would be able to hold on to claim the 76-68 victory.
Sr. G Grace Wheeler (St. Ignace/LaSalle) led three Scots in double digits, scoring 14 points and grabbing six rebounds. Sr. G Mallory Pruett (Ishpeming/Ishpeming) added 13 points in a game-high 35 minutes, while Zink chipped in with 10 points. Off the bench, Fr. G Lauren Higgins (Sterling Heights/Cardinal Mooney Catholic) recorded four points, six rebounds and three assists.
Alma shot 26-of-57 (45.6%) from the floor and 9-of-22 (40.9%) from deep. The Comets held the 43-32 rebounding advantage and scored 40 points in the paint compared to 28 by the Scots.
Alma returns home on Saturday, January 10, taking on Calvin College at 5:00 p.m.
