Box Score Wednesday evening saw the Alma College Women's Basketball team travel to Adrian College to take on the MIAA rival Bulldogs in a league tile. A close, defensive game was close throughout, but the home team was able to use one burst to open a lead and hold on for a 59-54 victory.
With the defeat, the Scots are now 1-7 in the league and 6-11 overall, while Adrian improved to 2-6 in the MIAA and 6-10 in 2014-15.
"We had too mental breakdown on both offense and defense," said Scots Head Coach Kris Johnson. "We need someone to step up for us and lead."
The first half was a low scoring affair and close throughout and was tied at 8-8 before a three-pointer by Alma So. G Tara Padgett (Freeland/Freeland) at the 13:33 mark. The Scots also led 19-13 after two free throws by Sr. G Morgan Henry (Wayland/Wayland Union) with 6:15 left. Adrian would score the final six points of the half and the two teams went into the halftime break tied at 19-19.
The final frame started out slow as well and the two teams were still deadlocked with 14:48 remaining in the game, 23-23. The Scots then had a short-lived three point lead after a triple from Sr. G Mallory Pruett (Ishpeming/Ishpeming).
The Bulldogs then answered with their best offensive spurt of the night as they went on a 14-3 run to lead 37-29 at the 9:44 mark. Alma cut it to two at 41-39 before Adrian extended it back to 47-40 with 4:07 left in the contest.
Alma never gives up though and twice got within striking distance only to have Adrian push them back. Jr. F Raeanna Zink (Frankenmuth/Frankenmuth) made a jumper at 2:39 that cut the deficit to one and then Padgett put in a lay-up with 37 seconds left to make it a 55-53 game.
However, the home team scored four of the game's final five points, including two big free throws to hand on for the 59-54 victory over the visitors from Alma.
Padgett was the Scots' leading scorer with 12 points and was followed by Sr. G Grace Wheeler (St. Ignace/LaSalle) who had 10 in a losing effort. Pruett finished with a team-best five rebounds and four defensive steals.
The Scots will continue the MIAA schedule on Saturday night when they host Saint Mary's College at Art Smith Arena. Tip-off is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
