Women's Soccer wins at Calvin 2-1 in Overtime on Monday 2-1

Box Score

Alma Jr. F Kelly Wilson (Midland/Dow) scored 8:32 into overtime to give the Alma College Women's Soccer team a dramatic 2-1 victory over Calvin College in the MIAA opener for both teams. With the victory, the Scots are now 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the league, while the Knights drop to 1-2 in 2014 and 0-1 in the MIAA.

"It's great to get our first conference win and to do it against a very good Calvin team," said Scots Head Coach Matt Saul. "We continue to improve with each game and today we showed great character. We were relentless. We will now focus our attention on a tough game away at Albion on Thursday."

Both teams came out offensively, but their was no scoring in the first half until Calvin MF Stacie Skinker scored off a cross from the right corner at 43:38, past Alma Fr. GK Jenna Fassbender (Mattawan/Mattawan).

For the half, Alma outshot the Knights by a four to three margin, but Calvin held the advantage in total shots nine to six.

Alma came out charging in the second half and scored the equalizer just 31 seconds in, when So. D/F Megan Kalanik (Milford/Lakeland) took a pass from Sr. M/F Kailey Vlug (Coopersville/Coopersville) and buried it into the net.

The two teams then went back and forth and each had chances to score in the remainder of regulation. However, the game stayed deadlocked at 1-1 and was sent into extra soccer.

Then, Wilson broke in alone during the first extra frame and put away the golden goal, sending the Scots off the pitch with a big early conference season victory.

For the game, the Scots finished with a 18-14 advantage in total shots, including three to one in the eight minutes of overtime. Alma also had the upper hand in shots on goal by a margin of 10 to six and corner kicks, seven to one.

Fassbender made four saves to earn the win in net, while Wilson paced the Scots with six total shots and four on goal. Sr. F Mackenzie Smith (Saginaw/Nouvel) added three total shots with two finding the net.

Today's win was the program's eighth all-time against Calvin in 47 matches, but including the 2011 season, the Scots are 5-2 against the perennial powerhouse Knights over the past three years.

Up next for the Scots is a much improved Albion Britons team on the road. The MIAA tilt is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.
