Women's Soccer comes from behind to defeat Adrian College 4-1 on Saturday

Box Score

On a unusually warm late September afternoon, the Alma College Women's Soccer team hosted MIAA foe Adrian College at Scotland Yard. The warm and sunny conditions were perfect for playing and the Scots took advantage to record the victory.

After spotting the Bulldogs a goal midway through the first half, the Scots got the equalizer before halftime and then scored three unanswered tallies in the second frame to notch the 4-1 victory.

With the win, Alma improved to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the MIAA, while the Bulldogs are now 4-5-1 in 2014 and 3-4 in the league.

"Today we shuffled the lineup a bit and also used a different tactical approach," said Alma Head Coach Matt Saul. "We wanted to put some pressure on the opponent and I was happy with how our team responded to that challenge. We played well against a good team, and we saw some positive contributions from several players. It was a good day and we now need to carry that over to the game at Trine on Wednesday."

Typical of the whole match, the majority of game time was spent in Adrian's side of the pitch throughout the beginning of the game, but Alma could not get any real good chances at Adrian GK Lexi Lewandowski.

Then, at 27:27, the Bulldogs' Aly Masciovecchio scored off of a free kick that went over the head of Scots Fr. GK Jenna Fassbender (Mattawan/Mattawan), giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

However, the Scots did not panic and their perseverance paid off at the 43:35 mark when Fr. D Amanda Mladenovski (Shelby Township/Henry Ford II) took control of the ball off of a deflection and booted it into the net to tie the contest at 1-1. That is how it would remain heading into the break.

The second half belonged to the Scots from start to finish as the slanted field continued through the final 45 minutes. Alma put pressure on early and often and at the 61:57 mark, the goal onslaught began in earnest.

So. M Jessica Burg (Grand Ledge/Grand Ledge) started it with a 35 yard strike that went over Lewandowski's head and into the upper corner of the net. Less than five minutes later, Jr. M Agatha Weddle (White Lake/Walled Lake Northern) took a fantastic cross from Sr. M/F Kailey Vlug (Coopersville/Coopersville) and knocked it in for a 3-1 Alma lead.

The finishing touch to the game came from Jr. F Bryn Kittle (Rockford, IL/Rockford Christian), who used a determined individual effort to make a move on the right side before blasting it into the net at 72:38.

That tally gave the Scots a three-goal advantage that held up until the end of the match. Alma walked off the pitch with a very impressive 4-1 victory over a good Adrian squad and sent the Scots fans home happy.

For the game, Alma outshot Adrian by a margin of 26-12, including 15-5 in shots on goal. Fassbender notched four saves to earn the win and improve to 5-3 on the year. The Scots also had a six to three advantage in corner kicks and fouls were 11 to six Scots.

Individually, Weddle had four total shots (one on goal) and So. M Macayla Greiner (Hart/Hart) paced the Scots with three shots on goal. Burg, Mladenovski and Fr. D Brooke Steed (Franklin, TN/Centennial) each contributed two shots on net.

Alma next plays on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Angola, Ind., to take on Trine University. Match time is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
