Box Score On Thursday afternoon, the Alma College Women's Soccer team traveled to Albion to take on the Britons in a MIAA contest. The home team scored two goals in the first half and then held on to beat the Scots by a score of 2-1.
With the defeat, Alma fell to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the league, while Albion improved to 1-1 in the MIAA and 5-1 in 2014.
Albion broke a scoreless tie at the 25:03 mark when Jenna Urso scored a goal against Alma Fr. GK Jenna Fassbender (Mattawan/Mattawan) for a 1-0 lead. The Britons then scored just over seven minutes later as Taylor Shrader beat Fassbender for a 2-0 home team advantage.
However, towards the end of the first 45 minutes, Alma closed the gap to 2-1 when So. F Brianna Russell (Plainwell/Delton Kellogg) scored on a rebound at the 40:07 mark. The two teams would then go into the break engaged in a one-goal contest.
In the second half, the Scots outshot Albion by a margin of nine to five, including five to two in shots on goal. But Alma could not find the equalizer as Britons GK Maggie Troost was outstanding on the afternoon. The visitors fought to the end, but a shot by Sr. F Mackenzie Smith (Saginaw/Nouvel) in the 88th minute would prove to be the last scoring opportunity on this afternoon.
The much improved Britons held on for the victory and proved that the 2014 MIAA season is going to be a battle to the end, with every team having a chance.
Fassbender had four saves in the loss and Russell paced Alma with three total shots, all on goal. Jr. F Kelly Wilson (Midland/Dow) added four total shots and one on goal, while Smith finished with three shots and one on net.
The Scots must regroup quickly as they play at Saint Mary's College on Saturday afternoon down in Indiana. Match time is scheduled for Noon.
