Alma WLAX defeated Albion 14-9 on Wednesday in key MIAA matchup

Box Score

On a cold, un-spring like day at Bahlke Field, the Alma College women's lacrosse team hosted Albion College in a key MIAA matchup. The Scots dominated play in the second half en route to a come from behind 14-9 victory over the Britons.

With the win, Alma is now 4-1 in the MIAA and 9-5 overall, while Albion fell to 3-1 in the league and 6-5 in 2014.

Albion got on the board first with a goal just 3:55 into the contest but the Scots answered with the next two goals just 16 seconds apart at 23:20 and 23:04. So. A Ashton Street (Brighton/Brighton) and Jr. M Sydney Bryce (Lake Orion/Lake Orion) recorded the two tallies for the Scots.

The Britons would then take a 4-2 lead by scoring the next three goals of the first frame. The last of those tallies came at the 14:35 mark but Jr. M Tracy Gallihugh (Lansing/Waverly) responded 23 seconds later with her 46th goal of the season to make it a 4-3 game.

The visitors kept at it however and were able to increase their lead to 5-3 on a goal with 2:20 left in the first half. Then, just as it looked as though the two teams would go into halftime with no more scoring, Gallihugh hit the back of net with seven seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 5-4 at the break.

After some halftime adjustments, Alma came out blazing in the final 30 minutes and scored the first six goals of the frame. The first was by Gallihugh 1:04 into the half and the sixth was from Street at the 14:32 mark.

Albion scored to make it 10-6 but the Scots responded with three consecutive goals, one by Gallihugh and two by Street, to basically put it away at 13-6. Following a tally by the Britons, Gallihugh closed out Alma's scoring with her sixth goal of the day to make it 14-7 with 7:10 left in the game.

The visitors scored two meaningless goals in the final minute and it was too little, too late, as the Scots walked off the field with the five-goal victory.

Gallihugh finished with her six goals and Street was next with four. In addition, Bryce ended up with three tallies of her own in the victory. So. D Emily Reverman (Grand Ledge/Grand Ledge) had a goal and three ground balls on the afternoon. Sr. GK Stephanie Herman (Bay City/All-Saints Central) earned the victory in net and had five saves for Alma.

Up next for the Scots is a home match with Olivet College on Friday afternoon at Bahlke Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
