WLAX defeated Defiance 20-4 on Saturday afternoon at a chilly Bahlke Field

Box Score

On a cloudy and blustery late March afternoon, the Alma Scots women's lacrosse team hosted Defiance College (OH) at Bahlke Field. The Scots defeated the Yellow Jackets by a score of 20-4 in the non-league matchup.

Alma left the contest with a season record of 5-4, while the first-year Yellow Jackets leave town with a 1-5 mark in their inaugural campaign.

The Scots scored early and often making sure the upstart Yellow Jackets did not get confidence for an upset. Fr. A Stephanie Chou (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) scored 43 seconds into the game to make it 1-0 and Fr. A/M Valkyrie Progar (Brighton/Brighton) made it 2-0 less than one minute later.

After the Yellow Jackets made the score 2-1 at the 26:16 mark, the Scots reeled off four goals in the next five minutes, including Chou's second of the day, to lead 6-1 just 8:30 into the contest.

Alma would lead 12-1 (10 straight goals) before Defiance scored again at 6:51. The Scots then scored the final three goals of the half to take a 15-2 advantage into halftime.

Jr. M Tracy Gallihugh (Lansing/Waverly) paced Alma with four goals in the first 30 minutes, while Chou had three and So. A Ashton Street (Brighton/Brighton) had two for the home team. The Scots outshot the Yellow Jackets by a margin of 28-4 in the first half.

The second half was a status quo 30 minutes as the Scots played a lot of people and maintained their big lead throughout. The Yellow Jackets actually scored the first two goals of the final frame and cut the deficit to 15-4 at the 15:15 mark.

However, Alma responded a goal 51 seconds later and finished with the final five goals of the contest, safely keeping Defiance at bay. Chou scored three more goals in last 30 minutes, while Street and Gallihugh each had one for the Scots.

For the game, Chou had six tallies and an assist, while Gallihugh finished with five goals and one helper. In all, nine different Scots found the back of the net and Sr. GK Stephanie Herman (Bay City/All-Saints Central) finished with two saves in the victory.

Alma next plays on April 2 when they travel to Adrian to take on the defending MIAA Champion Bulldogs in the first game of league action. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
