Women's Soccer defeated at Adrian 5-2 on Tuesday night

Box Score

On a cool Tuesday evening, the Alma College Women's Soccer team hit the road to take on Adrian College in a key MIAA matchup. The hometown Bulldogs scored four second half goals to defeat the Scots by a score of 5-2 to tighten an increasingly tight playoff race.

With the loss, Alma is now 7-6-1 in the league and 9-7-1 in 2014, while Adrian improved to 6-7-2 in the MIAA and 8-8-3 overall this season. The Scots have now lost four of their last five matches and need to find the magic in the last two games to secure a playoff spot.

The contest started out well for the Scots as they scored just 7:22 into it when So. D/F Megan Kalanik (Milford/Lakeland) scored on a header off of an assist from Sr. M/F Kailey Vlug (Coopersville/Coopersville).

Adrian would tie it at 1-1  at the 29:42 mark when Erin Weide scored the first of what would be four goals on the night. The two teams went into the break deadlocked as each team also had three shots on goal with Adrian leading in overall shots seven to five after 45 minutes.

Weide scored at 48:28 and 51:50 to put the Bulldogs ahead 3-1 and Alma found themselves on their heals. The Scots regrouped however and Jr. MF Allysen Neumann (Greenville/Greenville) converted on a free kick from 30 yards out to make it a 3-2 ballgame.

But, less than three minutes later, Adrian regained a two-goal advantage at 4-2 and that seemed to deflate the visitors just a bit. Weide then tallied her fourth of the night at 76:02 and the home team had their final 5-2 margin of victory.

For the night, Adrian held a 19-10 advantage in total shots and 10 to seven in shots on goal. Vlug paced Alma with two shots on goal, while Jr. F Kelly Wilson (Midland/Dow) had a team-high three total shots. Fr. GK Rachael Fokken (Pinckney/Pinckney) finished with five saves in net for the Scots in the loss.

The Scots now have two regular season matches left on the season, both at home, as a playoff berth hangs in the balance. On Saturday, Alma will host Trine University at Scotland Yard beginning at Noon. Then, on Monday, November 3, the Scots will close out their regular season with a home match against Kalamazoo College at 3:00 p.m. at the Yard.
