Women's Soccer won 3-0 at Olivet College on Wednesday afternoon

Box Score

On Wednesday afternoon, the Alma College Women's Soccer team traveled to Olivet College to take on the Comets in a league matchup. The Scots were able to score a goal early in the match to set the tone for a 3-0 road victory over the Comets.

With the win, Alma is now 7-4-1 in the MIAA and 9-5-1 overall, while Olivet fell to 1-11-1 in the league and 4-11-2 in 2014.

"We had a solid performance from the entire group," said Alma Head Coach Matt Saul. "We defended especially well and looked very dangerous with every attack. It was a win we needed and we can roll into the game with Hope with some renewed confidence."

After having trouble scoring in their past few games, the Scots were determined to get off to a quick start against the Comets and were successful in their game plan. At the 5:44 mark, Jr. F Kelly Wilson (Midland/Dow) scored on a cross from the right side, assisted by Jr. M Agatha Weddle (White Lake/Walled Lake Northern).

At 31:46 of the first half, Alma made it a 2-0 contest when Jr. MF Allysen Neumann (Greenville/Greenville) scored unassisted on a free kick to the far post from 20 yards out.

The Scots would take the two-goal advantage into halftime but Olivet did lead in total shots (10-9), while shots on goal were even at five to five. The Comets also had four corner kicks to Alma's two in the first 45 minutes.

Early in second half, Alma looked to close out the Comets as they came out of the chute quickly. The visitors put the pressure on and recorded two corner kicks and a shot wide before Weddle was awarded a penalty kick at 61:11. The junior buried the opportunity and the Scots extended their advantage to 3-0.

That would prove to be more than enough as Alma played a methodical remaining of the half to preserve the much-needed league victory. In the second frame, Alma had six total shots to three for Olivet and the Scots had four shots on goal to the Comets' two.

The nine Alma shots on goal were spread pretty evenly with Wilson, Weddle and Neumann each recording two on the afternoon. Wilson also paced the Scots with three total shots. In goal, Fr. GK Rachael Fokken (Pinckney/Pinckney) earned her first collegiate victory to go along with her first career shutout. She was credited with seven saves in earning the win.

On Saturday, Alma will look to avenge an earlier loss to Hope College. Start time in Holland against the Flying Dutch is scheduled for Noon.
