Box Score On Saturday afternoon, the Alma College Volleyball team completed a weekend sweep as they traveled to Albion College to take on the Britons in a MIAA contest. The Scots beat Albion 3-0 (29-27, 25-23, 25-15) after defeated Olivet 3-1 on Friday evening.
With the victory, Alma is now 8-5 in the MIAA and 15-14 overall on the season, while Albion fell to 4-22 in 2014 and 1-13 in the league.
"It was nice to win the match in three," said Scots Head Coach Sarah Dehring. "Albion has really improved over the course of the season. We had to work hard for the win. The girls were able to make adjustments in this match, which has been a struggle in the past."
In set one, there were six ties before Alma pushed out to a 19-15 advantage. However, Albion scored the next four to tie it again at 19-19. After the Scots led 23-20, the Britons again answered and deadlocked it at 23-23.
Finally, with the set at 27-27, the Scots closed out the win on back to back kills by So. MH/OH Madison Smith (Westphalia/Pewamo-Westphalia) and Jr. OH/DS Hannah Guilford (Hartland/Hartland).
The second set saw Albion jump out to a 3-0 lead before Alma scored 12 of the next 16 points to take a 12-7 advantage. The home team then responded with nine consecutive points and led by a margin of 16-12, ultimately leading 22-19. Alma fought back to tie the game at 23-23, before So. S Mary Dulzo (Novi/Mercy) finished the win with two consecutive service aces.
After winning the first two sets, Alma was riding high and was able to close out the match with a much easier third set. The Scots jumped to a 3-0 lead and led 8-2 before an Albion timeout. The Scots extended the advantage to 12-4 before the Britons closed it back to 15-12. However, Alma avoided any suspense by scoring 10 of the next 13 to win 25-15 and close out the match.
Dulzo paced the Scots with 26 assists, three service aces and 10 digs, while Guilford finished with a team-highs with 13 kills and 12 digs. So. RS/OH Kendall Sells (Muskegon/Mona Shores) and Smith added nine and eight kills respectively. Fr. DS Jenna Pesch (White Hall/White Hall) contributed 11 digs.
The Scots are down to three matches left in the regular season and will host third place Trine University on Wednesday evening at Art Smith Arena. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
