Box Score On Wednesday afternoon, the Alma College Women's Soccer team traveled to Angola, Indiana to take on Trine University in a MIAA contest. After a scoreless first half, the Scots exploded for three goals over a 16 minute span in the second frame to earn a 3-0 victory.
With the win, Alma improved to 5-2 in the league and 7-3 overall, while the Thunder fell to 2-4-1 in the MIAA and 4-5-1 in 2014.
"Today was a very professional performance and we can certainly take a lot of confidence from our last two games," said Scots Head Coach Matt Saul. "It was especially exciting to see the maturity our freshmen and sophomores showed today, who are really excelling under the leadership of the older players. We now must re-focus for a tough game against Kalamazoo this Saturday."
The Scots had 11 shots to Trine's 10 in the first half and each squad had three on goal. But, neither Alma Fr. GK Jenna Fassbender (Mattawan/Mattawan) and Trine's Skyler Reed allowed one into their respective nets.
The second half saw Alma finally dent the back of the net as Fr. D Amanda Mladenovski (Shelby Township/Henry Ford II) scored an unassisted tally at 51:23. Then, just 2:13 later, Mladenovski scored again, this time off a rebounded shot from Fr. M Olivia Whalls (Brighton/Brighton) and the Scots had a 2-0 advantage.
Alma put the game out of reach at the 67:45 mark, when So. M Macayla Greiner (Hart/Hart) knocked in a rebound from Fr. D Brooke Steed (Franklin, TN/Centennial) for a 3-0 visitors lead. That would be all that the Scots would need to walk off the pitch with the three-goal victory.
The Scots had an additional 11 total shots in the final 45 minutes to finish with 22 and they notched nine shots on goal for the match. Trine had two shots in the second half and finished the game with 12, including five on goal. The Scots had three corner kicks to Trine's one.
Fassbender stopped all five Trine shots on goal to record her third shutout of the season and her record is now 6-3 on the year. Greiner paced the Scots with three shots on goal, while Mladenovsky had three total shots with the two on net. Sr. F Mackenzie Smith (Saginaw/Nouvel) contributed two total shots and one on goal in the win.
The Scots next play on Saturday down in Kalamazoo for a key MIAA matchup. Start time is scheduled for Noon.
