Scots Women' Soccer loses 1-0 game at MIAA foe Adrian College on Saturday afternoon

Box Score

On Saturday afternoon, the Alma College women's soccer team traveled to Adrian College to take on the Bulldogs in an important MIAA contest. Adrian scored the only of the game and held on for a 1-0 victory in the closely contested match.

With the loss, the first-place Scots fell to 5-1 in the MIAA and are now 5-4 overall. The Bulldogs, facing an almost must-win, improved to 5-2 in the league and 7-3 in 2013.

"We wasted an opportunity today, as Adrian came out with a focus and work rate which allowed them to take the game to us, the way the game is supposed to be played," said Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "The second half was a completely different story, as we executed our original game plan and created more than enough chances to change the outcome. It helps when they clear two balls off the end line after the keeper is beat, but we simply lacked the killer mentality to make a final play too often.

"This one hurts, but when you don't show up for the opening whistle, every team in the MIAA will make it difficult for you."

The game was scoreless until the 23:17 mark when the Bulldogs' M Ellery Kersten scored from the left wing 28 yards out over Scots Fr. GK Marissa Platz (Belmont, Mich./Rockford). The first 45 minutes would end with the Bulldogs holding the 1-0 advantage.

In the first frame, Adrian had 11 total shots to Alma's six, including a six to two advantage in shots on goal. In addition, the Bulldogs had four corner kicks to the Scots' three.

The second half saw the Scots put on relentless pressure against Adrian GK Lexi Lewandowski, but the visitors were unable to penetrate the back of the net. Alma had 15 second half shots, including seven on goal, while the Bulldogs launched five total shots (three SOG) at the visiting net.

Alma will next play on Wednesday afternoon at Trine University, with the match scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
