Scots Women's Soccer defeats host Hope College on Tuesday evening

Box Score

It was a early season battle of MIAA unbeatens as the Alma College Women's Soccer team took on host Hope College on Tuesday evening. The one left standing with no league losses was the Scots after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Flying Dutch in Holland.

Alma is now 5-0-0 in the league and 5-3-0 overall, while Hope fell to 4-1-1 in the MIAA and 7-1-1 in 2013.

"Winning at Hope is a difficult thing to do, so getting three points on the road is big," said Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "I was really impressed with the way our girls imposed our will on them late in the first half, and that carried right into the second half. Our bench really gave us a lift today, and raised the level of play in each change we made.

"Hope is one of the top offenses in the league and to limit their chances in the way we did, especially in the second half by only giving up one shot, is a testament to our team defending. We will enjoy this for tonight, but it's right back to work bright and early tomorrow morning. We have a very good Adrian team waiting for us on Saturday."

The Scots scored the only goal of the game at the 20:06 mark when So. M Agatha Weddle (White Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) scored from 18 yards out on an assist by Sr. M/F Taryn Handyside (Montrose, Mich./Hill-McCloy).

In the first half, each team had six total shots but the Scots held the advantage in shots on goal by a four to one margin.

The final 45 minutes were intense but scoreless as Alma's stifling defense kept Hope at bay to earn the one-goal road victory. The Scots had six total shots to Hope's one in the second half with each team having one hit the net.

In net, Fr. GK Julie DeBus (Howell, Mich./Hartland) made two saves to earn the shutout win and improved to 3-2 on the season. Fr. M Macayla Greiner (Hart, Mich./Hart) led Alma with three total shots and one shot on goal, while Weddle finished with two shots, including the one on net.

Alma continues the 2013 season on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Adrian College for another MIAA match. Start time is scheduled for Noon.
