Box Score The Alma College Women's Soccer team defeated Olivet College on Saturday afternoon by a score of 3-0 to improve to 4-0 in the MIAA and 4-3 overall. With the loss, the Comets fell to 4-3 in 2013 and 1-3 in the league.
"It feels good to get our first road win under our belt as those don't come easy in MIAA play," said Scots Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "We did a great job if dictating tempo in the early minutes of the match and throughout the entire second half. Breezy Russell is proving to be a difficult player for opponents to handle because of her quickness on the ball and pace. She was directly involved in many of on the chances we created today.
"I'm proud of the girls for focusing on the task at hand, as we have a very big week coming up at Hope and at Adrian."
The Scots dominated the action and pace of the match throughout the afternoon, but did not have a lot to show for it after 45 minutes. So. M Agatha Weddle (White Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) notched the only goal of the half when she scored unassisted from Sr. D/M Catherine Olson (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) at 12:34 for a 1-0 Alma lead.
Alma outshot Olivet 12-2, including four to one in shots on goal and had the only two corner kicks of the first frame.
Fr. F Brianna Russell (Plainwell, Mich./Delton Kellogg) made it 2-0 Alma at 69:57 on an assist from So. F Kelly Wilson (Midland, Mich./Dow). Then, at 85:06, the Scots closed out the scoring as Fr. M Macayla Greiner (Hart, Mich./Hart) hit the back of the net on an assist from Jr. M/F Kailey Vlug (Coopersville, Mich./Coopersville). The second tally gave the visitors the final 3-0 margin of victory.
Fr. GK Julie DeBus (Howell, Mich./Hartland) earned the shutout victory by making three saves on the afternoon, improving her record to 2-2 on the season. The Scots outshot the Comets by a margin of 27-6 for the game (9-3 shots on goal) and were led by Russell's three shots on goal and nine total shots. Greiner finished with two shots on net and three overall for the Scots in the win.
Alma next plays at Hope College on Tuesday evening with the match scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
