Box Score The Alma Women's Soccer team improved to 3-0 in the MIAA and 3-2 overall as they defeated visiting Saint Mary's College 4-0 at Scotland Yard. The Scots scored three second half goals to put away a fiesty Belles squad and earn the hard-fought victory.
"Today was our most complete performance of the season in all aspects of the game," remarked Scots Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "Every single one of our players came prepared to play and worked hard to execute the game plan from start to finish. This is a great start to conference play, going 3-0 against some of the other top teams in the league.
"Cat Olson really steadied things for us in the middle of the park early, which put the rest of our team in position to be successful."
The Scots controlled play for much of the first half but was able to score only one goal - by So. F Kelly Wilson (Midland, Mich./Dow), assisted by Sr. D Autumn Root (Haslett, Mich./Haslett) at 26:16. The home team took the 1-0 lead into halftime after outshooting the Belles by a margin of 10-1, including 5-0 in shots on goal.
Fr. GK Julie DeBus (Howell, Mich./Hartland) played the entire first half in net for the Scots but did not have a shot reach the net against her.
Alma struck quickly in the second frame when Fr. M Jessica Burg (Grand Ledge, Mich./Grand Ledge) scored an unassisted goal off of a rebound at 46:12 to make it 2-0. They extended their lead to 3-0 at 54:24 as So. M Agatha Weddle (White Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) notched her first goal of the season, assisted by Root and Sr. D/M Catherine Olson (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney).
At 61:32, the Scots notched their final tally of the day when Fr. F Brianna Russell (Plainwell, Mich./Delton Kellogg) hit the back of the net on an assist by Wilson. That goal gave the home team the final winning spread of 4-0.
Fr. GK Marissa Platz (Belmont, Mich./Rockford) made five saves in her 45 minutes to help preserve the team shutout. For the game, Alma outshot Saint Mary's by a margin of 17-9, including 13-5 in shots on goal.
Sr. M/F Taryn Handyside (Montrose, Mich./Hill-McCloy), despite not scoring, led Alma with four total shots and three shots on net. Weddle hit the net with both of her shots in the win and Wilson launched four total shots in the game.
The Scots will next play on Tuesday afternoon when they host #1 ranked Wheaton College at Scotland Yard. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
