Box Score On Thursday afternoon, the Alma College Women's Soccer team hosted Albion College in a MIAA contest at Scotland Yard. The Scots jumped out early and used that advantage to defeat the Britons by a score of 3-1. With the win, Alma is now 2-0 in the MIAA and 2-2 overall, while Albion fell to 2-3 in 2013 and 0-2 in the league.
"Another total team effort today, everyone contributed in big spots and with a good amount of minutes," said Scots Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "It feels good to get two conference wins under our belt and build some momentum, as a very good Saint Mary's team comes to Scotland Yard on Saturday."
It took Alma just 6:01 to get on the board, as So. F Kelly Wilson (Midland, Mich./Dow) scored a goal, assisted by Fr. M Jessica Burg (Grand Ledge, Mich./Grand Ledge), into the lower left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
At 24:45, Fr. M Macayla Greiner (Hart, Mich./Hart) scored her first collegiate goal to give the Scots a 2-0 advantage. The tally was assisted by Jr. M/F Kailey Vlug (Coopersville, Mich./ Coopersville) and Alma took the two-goal lead into halftime, having outshot the Britons 12-1 (5-1 shots on goal).
The home team continued to carry the play throughout the second half and hit the back of the net again when Jr. F Mackenzie Smith (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel) scored from outside the 18, assisted by Burg and Sr. M/F Taryn Handyside (Montrose, Mich./Hill-McCloy) at 55:13.
The Scots were enroute to a potential shutout, but a defender took an unfortunate fall deep in the defensive zone and the Britons took advantage. Albion made it a 3-1 game at 78:59 after the miscue, but the visitors would not get any closer and Alma walked off the pitch with the two-goal victory.
For the game, Alma outshot Albion by a margin of 24-4 (10-3 shots on goal) and were led by four players with two shots a piece on goal. Fr. GK Marissa Platz (Belmont, Mich./Rockford) earned her first career collegiate win in net with two saves.
The Scots host MIAA foe Saint Mary's College on Friday afternoon at Scotland Yard. Start time is scheduled for Noon.
