Box Score The first weekend of the 2013 Scots Women's Soccer season came to an end on Saturday afternoon with a disappointing 1-0 defeat at the hands of host Franklin & Marshall (PA). With the loss, Alma is now 0-2 on the young campaign and next play on August 9, when they host Calvin College in the MIAA season-opener.
"It was a very disappointing result today, but that's what happens when you don't show up to start the match," said Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "I think this weekend gave us a much clearer picture of ideas that need to be addressed moving forward. Our style of play was much better for the first 20 minutes of the second half, it was fluid and creative which led to some very good scoring chances, which need to be converted."
The hometown Diplomats controlled the pace much of the first half and scored the only goal of the game at 28:54, when they converted a long pass from midfield and put it past Alma Fr. GK Marissa Platz (Belmont, Mich./Rockford).
Franklin & Marshall outshot the Scots by a margin of 6-3, with each team having one shot on goal, as they took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Alma came out with a much more determined effort in the final frame, outshooting the Diplomats 7-2, including 4-2 in shots on goal. However, the Scots were unable to penetrate the F & M net and the home team walked off the pitch with the one-goal victory.
Platz, playing in her first collegiate match, had two saves in net for the Scots. Four different players accounted for the five Alma shots on goal - So. F Kelly Wilson (Midland, Mich./Dow), who had two, Jr. F Mackenzie Smith (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel), Jr. M/F Kailey Vlug (Coopersville, Mich./Coopersville) and So. M Agatha Weddle (White Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Northern). The latter three each had one shot.
