Alma Women's Lacrosse beat Albion 19-12 - clinches 2nd Place in MIAA

Box Score

Alma College's Women's Lacrosse team had a chance to make history on Wednesday evening and they did not disappoint. The Scots defeated host Albion College 19-12 to secure second place and a berth in the first-ever MIAA Women's Semi-Finals.

The Scots finished their league schedule with a 5-1 mark and 14-2 overall and have earned the right to host a semi-final match on Thursday, May 2. The Britons fell to 2-3 in the MIAA and 5-7 overall.

The Britons are the ones that started fast on Wednesday night as they scored two goals in the first 2:17 to take a 2-0 early lead. Sr. A Brittney Cole (Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) answered with a tally at 25:40. The Scots then took a 4-3 lead, an advantage that they would not relenquish, when Sr. M Mary Harwood (Port Huron, Mich./Northern) scored on a free position kick.

Alma went into halftime with a 9-6 lead and were led by two goals each by Cole, Sr. A Christie Havrilla (Okemos, Mich./Okemos), So. M Tracy Gallihugh (Lansing, Mich./Waverly) and Fr. A Ashton Street (Brighton, Mich./Brighton).

Albion made it 9-7 46 seconds into second half and Havrilla made it 10-7 before the Britons cut it to 10-8 at the 23:11 mark. That is the closest the home team would come however, as the Scots scored seven of the next eight goals, the last one by Havrilla at 3:03, to take a 17-9 advantage.

The Scots scored two more and Albion had three to make the final score 19-12 when the final horn sounded.

Gallihugh and Street each ended up with five goals in the game, while Havrilla had four. In addition, Cole had three and Harwood had two tallies. Alma outshot Albion 39-23, including 29-18 in shots on goal, in the victory. Jr. GK Stephanie Herman (Bay City, Mich./All-Saints Central) recorded six saves in net.

The time and and match-up for the semi-final will be announced as soon as it is made available this weekend.
