On Tuesday afternoon, the Alma College Women's Lacrosse team traveled to Hope College to take on the Flying Dutch in the first-ever MIAA Women's Lacrosse match. The Scots captured a big first half lead and rode it to a 14-8 victory over the Flying Dutch.

The Scots jumped out to a 1-0 lead less than five minutes in when So. MF Tracy Gallihugh (Lansing, Mich./Waverly) scored unassisted. Alma led 3-0 before Hope got on the board, but the Scots did not let up and took a 7-1 advantage into halftime.

Gallihugh added one more tally in the half and Sr. A Christie Havrilla (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) scored twice for the visitors.

Even though each team scored seven goals in the second half, the Scots' lead was never really threatened. Gallihugh and Sr. A Brittney Cole (Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) each scored goals to give Alma the 9-1 advantage with 25:44 left in the game.

The Flying Dutch was competitive throughout but the closest they could get was a five-goal deficit at 11-6 at the 14:16 mark. But, Alma outscored the home team 3-2 from that point on and secured the impressive 14-8 league victory.

Gallihugh, Havrilla and Fr. A Ashton Street (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) each had four goals in the victory, while Cole had the other two. Jr. GK Stephanie Herman (Bay City, Mich./All-Saints) had 13 saves in net for Alma in the win.

With the win, Alma is now 9-1 overall this season and 1-0 in the MIAA, while the Flying Dutch fell to 1-7 in 2013 and 0-1 in the league.

The Scots next play on Saturday when they continue league play by hosting Trine University at Bahlke Field. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
